Stadion Ruchu Chorzow

Key facts

Club: Ruch Chorzow | Opening: 1935 | Capacity: 9,300 seats

History and description

Stadion Ruchu Chorzow, also referred to as Stadion Miejski w Chorzowie, was built in the 1930s.

In the 1920s, Ruch had moved between various grounds, but lacked a proper ground of its own. When they became Polish league champions in 1933 plans for an ambitious new ground with a capacity of 40,000 were made. Works started in 1934 and were completed one year later. Stadion Ruch Chorzow officially opened on 29 September 1935 with a match versus Warta Poznan (1-1).

During World War 2, the stadium sustained significant damage and after being patched up its capacity had halved to 20,000.

Stadion Ruchu Chorzow underwent various expansions in the 1960s which doubled capacity again to 41,000. The stadium remained the same for the next decades and in the 1990s and 2000s only underwent minor refurbishments including the addition of more seats. Safety measures reduced capacity significantly.

In the 2010s, Ruch started making plans for the construction of a new stadium and even briefly toyed with the idea to move into the large nearby Stadion Slaski. Plans for a modern 16,000 all-seater got very concrete in the second half of the decade but failed to get the final go-ahead from the council.

With Ruch currently in financial disarray and relegated down the leagues, construction of the new stadium is unsure.

How to get to Stadion Ruchu Chorzow

Stadion Ruchu Chorzow is located centrally in the city of Chorzow, just south of its small city centre. The walk from the city centre takes about 15 minutes.

Chorzow is part of the Silesian Metropolis, an industrial area comprised of a number of cities including Katowice, Gliwice, and Zabrze.

Chorzow Batory train station lies almost next to Stadion Ruchu. It is a reasonably large railway station though most direct trains are to regional destinations. The same is true for Chorzow Miasto train station, Chorzow’s main railway station that lies just north of the city centre. Katowice is the largest hub in the region and most longer-distance travels to e.g. Warsaw and Krakow require a change in Katowice.

From Katowice the stadium can furthermore be reached with tram 7. Take the tram from the Rynek market square or Plac Wolnosci and get off at stop Chorzow Batory. The journey takes a little over 20 minutes.

Ruch Chorzow Tickets
