Building works have kicked off on Debreceni’s new Nagyerdei Stadion right after the club had been given planning permission for the project.
The new stadium will get built at the site of the old Nagyerdei Stadion, a small athletics stadium that had been built in 1934 and had served for years as the home of Debreceni before the club moved to the nearby Stadion Oláh Gábor Út.
The old stadium will get demolished and a new 20,000-capacity all-seater will get built in its place. The new stadium will hold ample VIP facilities and sky boxes and comply with UEFA standards. It will have a transparent design that aims to integrate it with the surrounding park lands.
It is expected that works will last about 15 months, which means that the stadium will be completed in the spring or summer of 2014.
