After the successful opening of Stadion Narodowy w Warszawie (Warsaw National Stadium) only a week-and-a-half ago, the stadium experienced a new setback as Warsaw police decided that the stadium is not ready yet to host football games.
This means that the planned Polish Super Cup match between Legia Warsaw and Wisła Krakow, to be played this Saturday, has been cancelled.
Both police and the Polish FA had been frantically looking for a solution in the last few days, but the police earlier today finally decided ‘with a heavy heart’ to cancel the match as safety of the fans could not be guaranteed.
Consequence is that the 2011 Polish Super Cup will likely never be played as the clubs had already stated that it was this Saturday or never for them.
Both teams are still competing in the Europa league tournament, which, combined with their domestic schedule, leaves little room for a replacement date.
The next match scheduled at the stadium, a friendly between Poland and Portugal on the 29th of this month, is also in doubt, though FA President Grzegorz Lato expressed confidence that the fixture will be played as normal.
The stadium, which was originally planned to open last summer, has been plagued by a series of delays. Earlier this week though, the stadium could report some good news as pop star Madonna announced that it would be part of her 2012 World Tour.
