Nou Estadi de Tarragona

Key facts

Club: Gimnastic de Tarragona | Opening: 1972 | Capacity: 14,591 seats

History and description

Nou Estadi de Tarragona got built in the early 1970s at the initiative of club president José Luis Calderón who wanted to move the club from their stadium at the Avenida Catalunya to a newer and larger one.

The stadium officially opened on 2 February 1972 with a friendly against Barcelona (0-1). It could initially hold 18,000 spectators, but over the years this got reduced to 11,000 due to safety measures and various modifications.

Nou Estadi got expanded again in 2006 when a new stand was built following Gimnastic’s promotion to La Liga.

The stadium has been selected to host events during the 2017 Mediterranean Games in Tarragona.

How to get to Nou Estadi

Nou Estadi is located on the north-eastern edge of the city of Tarragona at roughly 2 kilometres from Tarragona’s old centre and a kilometre more from Tarragona’s railway station.

The walk from the old town to the stadium takes about 25 minutes. It is furthermore only a 10-minute walk away from the nearest beach, Playa Arrabassada.

The stadium can furthermore be reached with bus 8. Take the bus from the Rambla Vella near the old town. Get off at stop Estadi. On matchdays, bus 2, 3, and 5 have a changed route and also stop at the stadium. Buses can be caught at Pau Casals or the Rambla Vella.

Very frequent trains connect Tarragona with Barcelona. The journey takes 30 minutes to 1.5 hour depending on whether you pick a more expensive quick service or a slower regional train. There is furthermore a regular direct service from Valencia and a few direct trains a day from Madrid.

Address: Partida Budallera, s/n, 43007 Tarragona
