Hearts FC experienced a setback in their plans to move to a new stadium last week when the Edinburgh City Council announced not to participate in any future deal. The club and Council had recently been in talks to discuss the possibilities for building a joint “Community Stadium”, however these have now stalled after the local council backed away from any deal.
Hearts have been playing their home games at Tynecastle Stadium for over 115 years, but have been looking for a more modern alternative after a redevelopment of their current ground turned out to be not viable.
The City Council blamed their retreat on the current economic climate and Hearts’ worrying financial situation, stating not being willing to gamble taxpayers’ money on the project.
Hearts have now launched a new study into building the stadium without taxpayers’ support. The club has stated their willingness to swap the land of their current ground for a new development site, something the local government may be willing to consider, however first reports have indicated that there will be little interest from property developers for the Tynecastle land in the Gorgie/Dalry area of Edinburgh.
