Karaiskakis Stadium

Key facts

Club: Olympiacos FC | Opening: 2004 | Capacity: 33,334 seats

History and description

Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium was built at the same site as the old Karaiskakis stadium. The reconstruction of the new stadium took only 14 months. Total costs amounted to €60 million.

Karaiskakis Stadium opened in June 2004. It was one of the stadiums used during the 2004 Olympics.

Outside of the stadium one can find a monument that commemorates the death of 21 Olympiakos fans that got crushed at the exit of the stadium after a match against AEK in 1981. Among the red seats in the stadium 21 are painted black in memory of the deceased.

How to get to Karaiskakis Stadium

Karaikakis Stadium is located in the south-western Athens suburb of Piraeus. It lies on the edge of Piraeus city centre and about 2.5 kilometres east from the port. Central Athens is about 7 kilometres away.

The stadium can be reached with metro line 1 (green), which connects with Athens city centre and the Piraeus port. Metro station Faliro lies right next to the stadium.

Address: Karaoli Dimitriou & Sofianopoulou, 185 47 Piraeus

Eat, drink, and sleep near Karaiskakis Stadium

Karaiskakis Stadium is a short walk away from Piraeus city centre, which has a good variety of shops, bars, and restaurants. The main avenues are Iroon Polytechneiou and Grigoriou Labraki.

The stadium is, however, also easy to reach from Athens’ city centre, so you can also opt to eat and drink there and then catch the metro to the stadium.

There are a good few hotels located close to Karaiskakis Stadium. Olympic Hotel is a basic option just a few blocks off the stadium, though Carol Hotel is better situated towards Piraeus’ city centre. Hotel Lilia and Hotel Anemoni seem particularly good value, though are slightly further away.

Olympiakos Tickets

Tickets for Olympiakos games can be purchased online, or at the ticket office at Karaiskakis Stadium. Tickets are also available at the ticket windows of the stadium on the day of the match.

Ticket prices typically range from €10.00 to €30.00.

Olympiakos has the highest attendances in Greece and for the top matches against the likes of Panathinaikos and AEK it is advised to buy in advance.

This is from an away supporter’s perspective.
If you travel on the official coach transfer for your clubs supporters you will have a police escort from the city centre to the ground and a arrive at least 2 hours before kick off. You will disembark from your coach in a fenced compound and will not be allowed, by the police, to go anywhere other than into the stadium.
After numerous searches and checks you will have to while away 2 hours with a small kiosk as the only, very limited refreshment outlet. No TV or other entertainment.
Best to travel by metro to Piraeus, have a meal/drink and walk to the ground and in your own time.
The game will be watched through netting which completely encloses the away end. There is only one way in and out of the entire away end from the “concourse” where the kiosk is. Only 5/6? urinals for the whole away section.
An extremely poor, potentially dangerous and badly designed stadium with very basic facilities not up to the 21st century.
