Arena Zabrze

Key facts

Club: Gornik Zabrze | Opening: 1934 | Capacity: 24,413 seats

History and description

The Arena Zabrze, previously known as Stadion im. Ernesta Pohla, opened on 2 September 1934. It was initially called Adolf Hitler Kampfbahn as Zabrze was located in Germany back then, but the name was changed after World War 2.

The stadium got expanded in the 1950s and in subsequent decades small improvements were made, but by the turn of the century the stadium had significantly aged.

Plans were made for the complete rebuilding of the stadium, for which the club received approval in 2011. Soon after, demolition of the first three stands started, but the main stands was left standing so that Gornik could keep playing its home games at the stadium.

Financial problems with both the club and the contractor meant that construction moved slowly, and by the end of 2013 had almost stalled. After a new tender was agreed, the project was picked up again and the three stands were completed in early 2016. However, the construction of the fourth stand was postponed due to financial insecurities, and the old main stand therefore remains standing.

If the fourth stand will still get built, this will raise capacity to 31,871 seats.
