In reply to the above comment: Jim, the old train you described does not exist anymore. It has been replaced by a modern electric train -clean, comfortable seats, automatic doors, etc. Now it only takes one hour and seven minutes to get to La Plata, although the train still stops in 17 intermediate stations. The last train returns to BA at 20:30, but there are buses leaving from the bus terminal, which is just 3 blocks away from the train station. These buses run all night and are more expensive than the train -expect to pay more than 1 euro. If you saw the fans incident, you were lucky. I've never seen any in the last 15 years. Downtown La Plata is a very cool area, with a lively bar & cuisine scene. Regards and come back soon!

I visted the staduim in April to watch the v Nacional of Columbia in the copa libtadores. Nice big staduim which in truth it was only half full. We got tickets outside on the night of the match and paid about £10 opposite the main stand/area., the singing section was to the left. felt safe during the game and the atmosphere was brilliant despite Estudiantes losing the game 1-0. La Plata isn't that far from Buneos Aires but when catching the train it does stop every couple of minutes, it took nearly two hours so make sure you leave enough time because the staduim is quite far from the station. These trains are workers trains, the journey cost under a £1 but the train didn't have any doors on it ! I felt safe but there were some unsavery characters on the train. We caught the bus up to the staduim which takes about 20 minutes and we had to wait for a young lad about ( 14 ) to jump off the bus and had a small fight with a Gimnasia La Plata fan on route ! There's not a lot up at the staduim apart from a few bars outside the exclusion zone. ( no alchool with 1000 meters of a staduim on match day ) after the game we caught a taxi back to the train station but to our disbelief the trains had finished at 21:30, so be careful if your going to a night game. We asked about a taxi but Luckily enough the man behind the ticket office gave us a lift back to Buneos Aires for a about £10 ! It only takes 30 minutes by road to the centre of Buneos Aires. We really should have spent some more time in La Plata because it looked quite a nice place, but this was our first game of our five game trip and we had landed in Buneos Aires in the morning after the 14 hour flight from London.
