Estadio San Mamés Barria
Estadio San Mamés Barria is the planned new home for Athlétic Club de Bilbao. The stadium is currently in the initial construction stages.
First plans for the construction of a new stadium, which is to replace the current Estadio San Mamés, were made as early as 2004, but first contracts were only signed by the end of 2006.
The club presented the definite plans for the stadium in 2009. The stadium is planned to have a capacity of 54,000 seats, and is going to be built adjacent to the current stadium. Once the new stadium will be three-quarters finished, the old stadium will be demolished to make space for the construction of the fourth quarter.
The first stone was laid in March 2010, and a few months later actual construction of the stadium began. The stadium is expected to be three-quarters completed at the start of the 2013/2014 season. Athlétic will then move intp the new stadium, after which the full stadium is expected to be finished by 2015.
The new stadium is currently being referred to as San Mamés Barria, but the stadium will revert back to its original name once completed.
